The Rape of Ganymede was painted in about 1575 by Damiano Mazza. Painted as an oil on canvas composition, originally it was octagonal in shape, for it was original painted to fit the ceiling of a rooftop terrace.
The painting, The Rape of Ganymede, show the abduction of the Trojan prince, Ganymede, by the god Zeus. Zeus having transformed himself into an eagle to undertake the deed. Ganymede would become a lover of Zeus, and would also be given the honoured position as cupbearer to the gods.
