Painted in the 1620s by the Flemish artist Paul Bril, Diane and Callisto is a work undertaken with oil on pale. Diane and Callisto tells of the a tale from Greek mythology.
In the Greek pantheon Diane was known as Artemis, the goddess of hunting and one of the virgin goddesses; and Artemis expected all of her attendants to be virgins as well. Diane and Callisto depicts the moment when it is discovered that the beautiful Callisto is no longer a virgin, for her pregnancy is obvious, Callisto having been seduced by Artemis' father, Zeus.
