Titian painted the oil on canvas composition Sisyphus between 1548-49 for the Binche Palace, having been commissioned by Mary of Hungary.
Sisyphus shows the eternal punishment of Sisyphus King of Corinth in Tartarus. Sisyphus was punished by Zeus for revealing the location of the abducted Aegina, but Sisyphus sought to outwit Zeus and Death with his own slyness. Ultimately though, Sisyphus would spend eternity pushing a rock up a hill, only for it to roll to the base of the hill before Sisyphus managed to push it to the peak.
