Painted in about 1565 by Titian, The Punishment of Tythus depicts the story of the eternal punishment of Tythus from Greek mythology.
Tythus, also known as Tityos, was a giant in Greek mythology who attempted to rape the goddess Leto. Despite his enormous size and strength, Tityos was struck down by the arrows of Leto's children, Artemis and Apollo. The Punishment of Tythus shows the eternal punishment of Tityos in Tartarus, for everyday two vultures would pluck out the liver of the giant, only for it to regenerate overnight, More information about Tityos can be found here - (website opens in new window) Titian (Tiziano Vecelli) |
