Depicting an event from Greek mythology, Calypso receiving Telemachus and Mentor in the Grotto, was undertaken by William Hamilton in about 1791.
Telemachus is looking for information about his father, Odysseus, who has been missing for ten years since the end of the Trojan War. Odysseus had been kept on Calypso' Island for seven years, before Zeus had commanded his release. Yet even so Odysseus has yet to return to Ithaca, and now Telemachus and Mentor are seeking news of his whereabouts.
