The Wounded Philoctetes is an oil on canvas work, painted in 1775 by the famed Danish artist, Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard. The Wounded Philoctetes depicts the Greek mythological hero of the same name.
Philoctetes was one of those Greek heroes who had gather with the Achaean forces at Aulis, as the army assembled to retrieve Menelaus' wife, Helen from Troy. On the journey to Troy, Philoctetes was wounded, possibly by a snake bite, and at the urging of Odysseus, Philoctetes was left behind on the island of Lemnos, as the rest of the Achaean force travelled on to Troy.
