Prometheus is a painting undertaken by Briton Riviere in 1889. A fellow of the Royal Academy, Riviere was known for painting animals, but with Prometheus, Riviere depicted instead a scene from Greek mythology.
In this oil on canvas work, Riviere depicts Prometheus as a bound prisoner, for the Titan Prometheus had angered Zeus sufficiently for the Olympian god to chain Prometheus to the Caucasus Mountains for what was supposed to be eternity. As further punishment, an eagle would also pluck out Prometheus' regenerating liver each night. More information about Prometheus can be found here - (website opens in new window) Briton Riviere |
