Painted in 1635 by Jacobs Jordaens, Odysseus in the Cave of Polyphemus is an oil on canvas work which depicts a famous story from Greek mythology.
Odysseus and his crew had landed upon the island of Polyphemus on the journey back from the Trojan War. Polyphemus though, had imprisoned the Greeks in his cave, and now was content with eating them. To escape, the resourceful Odysseus would blind Polyphemus whilst he slept, and then by tying his crew and himself beneath Polyphemus' sheep, they managed to escape, hence the painting Odysseus in the Cave of Polyphemus shows Greeks beneath the sheep.
