Undertaken by Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder initially in 1757, The Abduction of Helen, is a work of art that shows one of the starting points of the Trojan War in Greek mythology.
Aphrodite kept her promise to Paris, following the Judgement of Paris, where she helped the Trojan prince to abduct the most beautiful of mortal women. Menelaus, Helen's husband then invoked the Oath of Tyndareus, bringing forth a 1000 ships to retrieve his wife from Troy. Though started in 1757, there is much evidence to suggest that the work of art was extensively reworked by Tischbein in 1787.
